“Discover Your
Creativity...”
by
Robert Leggett
You have a choice. Do you want to be constructive and positive in a unique way? Or do you want to
be destructive and negative in a unique way? History has proven the futility of the latter goal. So let's
focus on your unique capacity to better yourself and those around you.
In western music there are 12 notes per each octave on the keyboard. Only 12 notes. From these
simple 12 notes come the various musical works of Mozart, Brahms, Rossini, Beethoven, Donizetti,
Bach, Strauss, Wagner, Puccini, Verde, Gershwin, Gilbert & Sullivan, Rogers & Hammerstein. The
Beetles, Merle Haggard, Marti Robbins, Louis Armstrong, Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Little Richard,
Pointer Sisters and countless other unique performers, composers, and musical forms. What a variety
from 12 basic notes!
As a growing copywriter and Cyberspace Marketeer, I often seek new ideas and ways of doing stuff..
But before this process can happen, I have to "pay my dues." I do this through research over the
Internet. I get out and socialize, during work time and play time. Only afterwards am I able to discover
and lay out creative, unique solutions.
When I am given a set of parameters, I must intensely focus upon these, and then forget about them.
Within a week a unique idea "pops" into my consciousness. Several weeks ago, I was consulting with a
new client. He had "Hummingbirds" as part of his logo. He needed a slogan. He is in the restaurant
trade. How can I tie the concept of "hummingbirds" in with food service? Over time we discovered
"Every Bite...Hummingbird Light" Now he has a powerful slogan. We created a good
headline featuring his current offering. We listed bulleted benefits (yes, a tiny hummingbird was used as
each bullet). And a great slogan. His publicity pulls very well. He is unique in a positive way.
Logo This is usually a unique graphic. Sometimes it can be a simple choice of font
face, relative sizes, and placement. But a "killer" graphic logo is best. The logo reflects your whole,
unique business philosophy and image. It has to be so crystal clear the public recognizes it instantly. The
Colonel's bucket. The golden Arches. CocaCola Bottle. No words are needed. Never Copy. You
may Modify. Create New is best. Focus on this task. Then let it go. You might "dream" the solution.
Perfect your own unique logo.
Headline Vital to keeping interest of your target market. Going further with the above
"Hummingbirds" copy we told basically what it was, "Sunday Evening Roast." Then, right below that
line, we "painted a picture"
"Imagine yourself dining with your special someone on a secluded terrace. Your cozy
wooden table and chair...your temporary sanctuary from a hard plastic world. Your candle
gently flickers with each passing breeze. You are enjoying the intimate lightness of
Hummingbirds' unparalleled Sunday Roast."
Needs a little fine tuning...but it works.

Slogan (modified) follows
"Your Traditional British Roast...
Every Bite...Hummingbird Light"
After that comes phone number, location, directions etc.
However, at the last minute we decided to add in this area.
"Twiggy" 2-Course (price)
"Henry VIII" 3-Course (price)
Our target market was the British couple or foursome looking for a great Sunday Evening Roast.
Over the years I have collected aids and studied various areas of marketing. Long ago I got copy of
active verbs. Recently I got list of "Hypnotic Words" and successful headlines used over the years.
Also a list how different colors effect emotions. These are all great references when I am stumped or
want to make my copy even better. Some of the "greats" which come to mind are Claude Hopkins, Jay
Abraham, Ted Nicholas. Actually, some of the best ideas can be found on current Internet sales letters.
Occasionally I find the rare good headline in SPAM sent me. Yes, I even study some SPAM.
I have discovered my target market. They need my copywriting skills...the undercapitalized, open-
minded, serious entrepreneur. Nobody in my immediate vicinity practices principles of good
copywriting. I am unique. I am creative. My clients are unique. They seek creative solutions. They are
fun to work with. Our creative ideas keep amplifying each other's.
No matter what profession(s) you are into at this time, develop your uniqueness, discover your
creativity, dream your solutions. The more you practice, the easier it becomes. By the way, I had no
idea what I would write about this month. I kept thinking and thinking. Then "pop"...here it is. Now to
polish it up 24 hours from now. 828 words now...finally edited down to 794.
Turn Words Into Traffic
“Are You Submitting Your
Articles?...”
by
Robert Leggett
Last month, I began promoting Jason Potash's "Article Announcer." I always take a long time to
research new products on the market. I don't believe in "magic bullets." There is a principle taught in
physics, chemistry, biology and even Algebra 101. Nature seeks dynamic balance, equilibrium. If you
add something to the left side of the = sign, the right side moves to balance it.
I anticipated a reaction to the introduction of this new software. I was right. I chose to submit last
month's article, "Penury Perpetuates Poverty" the "hard way"...one by one to various lists found on the
Internet. Out of about 80 submissions to date, I discovered about 25% have temporarily (I hope)
ceased accepting new authors/articles. Some submission pages came up with a 404 Error upon clicking
the "submit" button.
Some have extremely obtuse instructions. Some simply don't work. Some are very specialized. Some
are email submissions only (which opens the door to being spam'd). Some of these bounced.
Right now I'm in the midst of checking each site if my article was accepted. I know it is "loading the
dice" when I access Google, Yahoo, MSN and search on ["Robert Leggett" Penury]. At this time I'm
getting over 600 listings and dominate the first few pages of these search engines. I'm even listed on
sites where I never submitted.
Of course just after doing my first "submission run" I periodically checked Google. Wow! Exposure
just kept growing! Then...one day...I got no listing at all on Google. Yahoo still liked me a little. The
following day I was baaaaaack... I need to research why Google didn't like me that one day.
Shortly after going to press...I shall continue checking latest submissions and begin submitting my new
article above. I am "paying my dues." I must know how this all works. It is new to me. Once I see
everything has settled down and a more stable balance has been achieved, I will seriously consider
purchasing Jason Potash's "Article Announcer"...if it saves me time. Always intelligently automate
whenever possible!
Taking time to "do it the hard way" I have learned much. My articles must have strong headlines. They
must contain words search engine spiders like. They must have valuable content. Don't take my word
on this. Check out a lot of "Submission Guidelines" at different sites. Through necessity, I must become
a better writer.
This exercise is time intensive. I have learned more not taking a "magic bullet" approach.
Other benefits include "sharpening up" our webZine "Cyberspace Marketeer"...offering greater content
and more user-friendly design. It will become even more useful to you when I include links back to
many of the Article Submission Directories. A new page for these will go up sometime during August.
I'll let you know when it's a fait accompli.
Meanwhile, write and rewrite your articles you plan to submit. Do a little research with different
submission sites. If you publish your own eZine or webZine, some sites accept these also. Some sites
also accept News Releases. Definitely get a feel for these submission sites. Work with them. When you
eventually decide to put much of this on automatic, you will have a much better overview of the
process.

“Web Surfers Revolt Against 'Pushy'
Advertising”
by
Jim Edwards

As the Internet continues to populate with websites trying to turn a buck, two drastically different
schools of thought have developed on how to advertise online - "Push" and "Pull."
"Push" advertising involves the use of "in-your-face" advertising tactics such as pop-up windows and
direct email. "Pull" advertising entails using search engines and posting articles that literally "pull"
interested consumers to a website on their own terms.
As web surfers revolt against pushy advertising, site owners who understand how to pull consumers to
their sites will come out the long-term winners.
"Push" advertising tactics worked in the past because they had not reached a saturation point. Since
not everyone used pop-up windows, a site owner could use them without fear of backlash. Now it
seems pop-up windows hit consumers from every angle and even multiple times from the same
sites.
The cycle of events with online advertising always unfolds the same way. Someone finds something new
that works and people immediately jump on the bandwagon. As a technique saturates the 'Net and
loses effectiveness, instead of finding an alternative, site owners just do it more!
Result: instead of pop-up windows going away, many site owners just run more pop-up's - more
often!
Well, if recent developments indicate anything, they show that consumers have said "enough" to pushy
advertising.
AOL, infamous for their pop-up ads, has agreed to cut down on the intrusions even though their
earnings could use a boost right now.
Major ISP (Internet Service Provider) Earthlink even offers a "pop-up killer" feature on their new
service.
Almost all email programs come with filters to fight unsolicited email and many email add-on services
have sprung up to help consumers eliminate the unsolicited offers for pornography, business
opportunities, and promises of instant riches.
This "anti-spam" sentiment has also caused an unintended consequence for legitimate marketers. Many
major newsletters have found their emails blocked by spam filters intended to stop unsolicited email.
Through no fault of their own, legitimate email marketers have found themselves casualties of the war on
spam.
The future of the Internet lies in "Pull" advertising driven by consumer wants and needs.
The successful Internet companies of the future will invest in search engine promotion and in providing
valuable, on-demand information consumers receive only when they ask for it and want it. When a web
surfer goes to their favorite search engine and enters the keyword phrase "MP3 Player" or "tax advice"
that means they are receptive to information on those subjects.
If they read an article about using vitamins to improve health and click a link for more information, only
then they will they be truly receptive to a marketing message about vitamins.
Consumers have taken back control of Internet!
Not with laws or more regulations, but simply by flexing the muscles of their wallets. By pulling money
away from advertisers who annoy them and putting it with those who meet their needs, the average web
surfer has brought the Internet powers to their knees and will continue to reshape the Internet into an
effective, consumer-driven communications vehicle.
Any site owner who wants to have a thriving online business and survive the next year had better take
this fact to heart!
